Instead of discussing about any new concept, in the last two articles, we focused our attention on some of the mistakes, which if not avoided will nullify all the hard work done in terms of search engine optimization. In this article, I will share some meta tags writing tips that will prove effective in getting a better ranking in the search engine result pages (SERPs).
As we discussed earlier, meta tags plays a very critical role in SEO, and the two meta tags that are very important are meta description tags and meta keyword tags. We will be focusing our attention on these two meta tags in this article.
Writing meta description tag
Meta description tag appears below the page title of each of the search result, and it has a significant impact on the click through rate of the displayed link. When writing meta description tags, please keep the following points in mind.
- A meta description should be less than 160 characters.
- It should be legible for the human reader.
- No two pages should have the same meta description tag.
- Texts in meta description tag should reinforce the keyword used in title tag or the main keyword of the web page. Try synonyms, plurals, or other versions of the same keyword. Try different combinations as well.
- Use modifiers with the other variants of keywords to reinforce the theme of the web page.
- A good meta description tag can differentiate your site from other sites on the same page.
Meta Keyword Tags
Due to its nature of being susceptible to spamming, and keyword stuffing, this meta tag has lost its former glory, yet it will not hurt to optimize your page with putting the right keywords in here.
- This meta tag is used primarily for the web crawlers. Your reader has nothing to do with it.
- Number of keywords should not be more than three.

In the last post, we talked about what a Sitemap is, and what is the difference between the two kinds of Sitemaps. Taking our discussion on Sitemap further, in this post, we will talk about the benefits of creating an XML Sitemap for your website.
For the starter, an XML Sitemap helps web crawlers in properly indexing all the pages of your website. It even takes web crawlers to the pages, which otherwise is not accessible by the search engine’s normal crawling process. There are certain content types, which require an XML Sitemap’s assistance to get noticed by the search engines. Creating and submitting an XML Sitemap is must if:
1. Some or all the contents of your website are dynamic.
2. Your website contains Flash contents, which by nature is not penetrable by any search bots. Hence, the content remains hidden from the eyes of Google and other search engines.
3. Your website has AJAX content, which is as impenetrable as is Flash content.
4. Your website has very few interconnected links. The web crawler moves from one page to another page following the links present on each of the pages. Hence, the website with poor interconnected links will be largely inaccessible to search engines bots. In situation like this, an XML Sitemap comes handy.
5. Your website has audio or video content.
6. Your website has an archive of unconnected or badly interlinked pages.
You can also use an XML Sitemap to inform the search engines about the frequency with which the content of your website changes. It also carries information about the date when the content was last modified. An XML Sitemap can be used to inform search engines about the importance of each page in the website as well. Although, a standard Sitemap works for most of the pages, you should consider creating and submitting specialized Sitemaps for the pages that has video, audio, mobile, and news contents. Creating a specialized sitemaps like geo sitemaps and code search sitemaps should also be considered.

SEO Simplified is back after a brief pause. I hope you have used the week-long break productively, and at this point, I expect you to have some control over keywords and related concepts (if you are new Click Keyword basics to begin learning about keywords and related concepts). Let me tell you a secret, the one-week break was intentional. It was given to make you repeat the concepts you learnt before we could move to another major concept, Sitemap. In the next couple of articles, we will discuss Sitemap and concepts related to it.
The word Sitemap is self-explanatory. In the literal sense, a Sitemap is the map of your website. In other words, Sitemap is a visual, hierarchical representation of all the pages of a web site. It tells the intended audience what all is there to see in the web site, and how to navigate to each of them. To draw an analogy, Sitemap is a detailed table of contents of a website, providing the same information as does the table of contents of a book. Having said that, we must know that Sitemap is not compulsory for a website, yet having a nicely structured Sitemap is very, very important. In the following paragraphs and articles we will know why it is so important.
There are two kinds of Sitemaps. The intended use of both the Sitemaps is different, and so is the intended audience. A Sitemap can either be an HTML Sitemap, or an XML Sitemap. An HTML Sitemap is a simple HTML page containing a section wise listing of all the pages on a website. It also lets out the information on the interlinking of individual pages within the website. This Sitemap is created to help the users of your website find the information they are seeking.
An HTML Sitemap makes the life easy for the users, and an XML Sitemap provides life-support to your website. An XML Sitemap is created for search engines with an intention to get noticed by their web crawlers or indexing spiders. This Sitemap gives information to the search engines about the pages and their interlinking on your website. If you want visitors to come to your website then you got to have an XML Sitemap. In terms of SEO, creating and submitting an XML Sitemap can be one of the most rewarding things for your website. HTML Sitemap does not influence the search results as does an XML Sitemap. Hence, to reach our common goal, in the series we will discuss XML Sitemaps only in the following posts.
I don’t think, I need to mention that an HTML Sitemap is made using HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), and an XML Sitemap is created using XML (Extensible Markup Language). This took us to the end of this post. Taking the discussion forward, in the next post we will discuss why exactly we need an XML Sitemap?
