09 Aug 09 10 Basics of Internet Marketing

The Internet is here for quite some time, and things about it are pretty much clear now. And, after the huge success of blogging, micro blogging, forums, social networking, social book marking, we realize that we cannot set the physical or perceptual perimeter around this technology, but we can always set some ground rules. In this article, I will share 10 basics of Internet Marketing that everyone needs to follow.

  1. Your website is your product, and how it looks is its packaging. Do not entrust an armature with this huge work. Get a professional designer to design your website. Just knowing Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Dreamweaver is not enough, one needs to know marketing and have sound imagination to churn up a good design.
  2. Apply White Hat Search Engine Techniques (Learn Search Engine Optimization). Avoid Black Hat SEO techniques.
  3. E-mail marketing is effective, if prior permission is taken from the subscribers. Use it.
  4. Give away something of value for free.
  5. Do you know what article marketing is? If you don’t hire someone to do this for you.
  6. Have your written press releases? If your answer is no then do it now!
  7. Run Contests, and give prizes that count.
  8. Talk to your visitors, they want to do that.
  9. Do not overuse affiliate marketing codes.
  10. Install Google Analytics and keep track of every inch of your virtual real estate. Measure everything that is measurable.

05 Jul 09 SEO SIMPLIFIED: What exactly is Black Hat SEO – II?

In the last article on this subject, we discussed about two schools of thoughts and their view on what Black Hat SEO technique is, but as we saw none of them was able to give a general theory or even widely acceptable theory that differentiate White Hat from Black Hat SEO practice. In this article, we will talk about the rest of the two schools of thought and their view on what exactly is Black Hat SEO. Let’s begin with The Visitor Value Approach and then we will conclude our discussion with The Property Right Approach of SEO classification.

The Visitor Value Approach

The followers of this school of SEO thought feels that an SEO activity that doesn’t add to the visitors’ experience should be classified as Black Hat SEO technique. This approach considers hidden text, micro-text, and ALT text spamming as Black Hat practices.

The visitor value approach to define the Black Hat SEO makes more sense as adding value to the visitors’ web experience has been kept at the center. This will motivate people to adopt the right approach even in web designing that ultimately will benefit the visitors. The subscribers to this school of thought believe that a Black Hat SEO practice may boost your SERP ranking, but it will not add anything to visitors’ experience so these practices should be banned.

The Property Right Approach

The believer in the right of property and the right to do anything with one’s property are fanatic subscriber to this school of SEO thought. This school of SEO thought professes that the website is your property, and anything you do with it is acceptable as long as you are not messing up with other people’s property.

This approach suggests, all the on-page SEO techniques are legal, but off-page SEO activities like link spamming, guest book spamming should be considered as Black Hat SEO practice.

04 Jul 09 SEO SIMPLIFIED: What exactly is Black Hat SEO – I?

In the last two articles, we have been talking about Black Hat SEO, and about the techniques that are out-and-out classified as Black Hat SEO techniques. The thing we are going to talk about in this article will tell you that there is no such thing as absolute Black Hat SEO technique, at least not in theory. Black Hat SEO may mean one thing to one group of people while something else to another group of people depending upon the SEO school of thought they subscribe to. In the course of next two articles we will try to analyze what these SEO schools of thoughts are. Let’s begin with The Search Engine Policy Approach, and we will also cover The Unnatural Ranking Approach in this article.

The Search Engine Policy Approach

The SEO professionals who follow this approach to classify an SEO practice into either Black Hat or White Hat believe that the SEO technique used by a website should be in sync with the policies and guidelines set by search engines, at least by the ones set by major search engines: Google, Yahoo and MSN.

For an untrained pair of eyes, this approach looks harmless, and more real than any other approach, but there is a slight problem with this approach. And the problem lies in the difference between policies and guidelines set by different search engines, which essentially means, you cannot optimize your website for all the search engines at once. You will need to ask yourself, which search engine you want your website to be optimized for? For example: if you put doorway page (Read about Doorway page here), Yahoo will not have any problem with that, but Google is not friendly to doorway pages. It, instead, suggest using 301 redirects.

The Unnatural Ranking Approach

The subscribers of this school of SEO thought has gone too far in professing that any SEO practice that unnaturally boosts the webpage ranking should be considered Black Hat SEO practice. On the surface this sounds good, but if we scratch the surface even with a coin, the real picture starts emerging.

There are two problems with this school of thought:

  1. The definition of “unnaturally high” is too vague to be accepted by everyone.
  2. According to this approach, every SEO practice is Black Hat. Think this over to the end and you will realize the truth behind this claim. This approach of thinking makes all the H1, H2, H3, Alt tags of your website Black Hat.

With this thought , I am concluding this article, and in the next article, we will discuss about The Visitors Value Approach and The Property Right Approach of SEO classification.
