The field was all set. The army was standing on the either sides of an invisible dividing line staring eye to eye, horses rearing to run over the opposition, but the battle never took place, at least not in that battle ground, or any particular battle field. The war was on, and it was taking place on each of the personal computers hooked up to the Internet—the war of social networking. King MySpace was using all its might to protect its castle, whereas, Facebook, the young rebel, was attacking with all guns. And the third player, twitter, was silently embracing whatever came its way.
This was the year 2009, and before it touched half of its mark, Facebook already has defeated the king (MySpace) and taken over the thrown. In May 2009, Facebook became the number one social networking site in the world.
By the time, 2009 came to a close, Facebook already has 112 million visitors (in December 2009) which was a 105% growth on December 2008 number (55 million visitors). Twitter grew by 900% from 2 million visitors in December 2008 to 20 million visitors in December 2009. Twitter growth reached its pick between February and April 2009 when its user base grew from 4 million to 17 million. (See image for complete report).
MySpace may have lost the crown, but it is not out. It has just changed the battle field. MySpace has started to devote its time on building entertainment content which triggered the growth of MySpace Music by 92% in the last year.
