We all being humans commit mistakes. The situations differ in the way we react to our own faults. Some of us treat our mistakes as failures and never try to proceed further from where we left. Others consider each mistake as a learning experience and each failure as a new milestone towards success. An internet marketing newbie is no different when it comes to erring while starting up an online business.

You can track these common bloopers that you might be committing, but be assured that it is not difficult to avoid them.

Insufficient research work

You will agree that most people get influenced with the best advertised products or business online if one is willing to begin one’s own online business. How many conduct an online research to verify and cross-check the advertisement or the claims made by the company? This is one of the biggest mistakes that a newbie internet marketer falls prey to. It is imperative to first gauge your interest and then launch an extensive research related to the product or service that you wish to make money out of. As you are planning to begin an online internet business, so you cannot afford to get cheated and lose money instead of making any. Whether it is to accumulate information abut the product or the company, the various search engines on the internet serve as efficient tools. Remember that product hopping cannot lead you to success, but a clear vision definitely can.

Lack of focus with dedication

If you are working from home on internet marketing for small business then nothing can be as satisfactory as earning money from the convenience of your home. The only trick is to remain focused. You will be surprised to know the fact that most of the internet marketing beginners overlook the keyword ‘dedication’ when at the ease of their home. There should be no distractions to lead you away from your work even if it is online business. Following a disciplined schedule and abiding by strict deadlines can make a firm client base for you. It may sound difficult, but practice carves out perfection which cannot be neglected for better professional prospects.

Inadequate internet marketing strategy

When you are in the rat race to make money then you cannot take chances with the internet marketing strategy made for your online business in the highly competitive work scenario. A carefully designed website with precise content proclaiming your domain of business is not assertive enough to divert traffic. You need to include the fast moving world of Twitter and the all exclusive insight provided by the Facebook’s Fan page in your business-to-business internet marketing stratagem to glide ahead of your competitors. It is essential for you to create a niche for your self online to be noticed by your clients and their friends to progress by leaps and bounds.

Confining oneself in a cocoon

You must admit that even the best product cannot sell without proper advertising. Similarly your services, however good, cannot make a mark without your vocalizing about them. Come out of your cocoon and become an active member of the social networking media. Speak in webinars and online chat conferences about your products and services directly or indirectly. This will not only increase the traffic, but also give an impetus to the word of mouth.

Abiding by these simple practices, you can become adept at internet marketing. Online internet mistakes are a part and parcel of business life. Even the most successful businessmen commit mistakes, but the real mettle is tested with the ability of ones brain power to absorb the shock wave and venture out with a refined spirit. So, better learn from others’ mistakes and avoid them.

Not everyone wants to use SEO, as it takes months before it starts delivering results. And those who need immediate result use Pay per Click (PPC) campaign. The process of buying a PPC ad may sound simple — choose a keyword, create a killing ad, make a bid, and run the campaign — but it is not simple, and in this, one mistake will burn a very deep, dark black hole in your pocket. Hence, pay close attention to the things I am going to discuss here.

All PPC engines are not equal

In the heading, I was tempted to add some are more equal than others, but decided to leave it out because adding it would have falsified the claim heading makes.

No two PPC engine are the same. They function differently, their target audiences are different, they have different search volumes, and they convert differently. You need to find what kind of keywords or campaign works well on the PPC engine you are considering. For example, home stuff works well on MSN and tech goodies converts well on Google.

Special attention to Keyword selection

Keyword selection is the key behind high-converting ads, and low-cost ad spots on PPC engines. It is commonly believed the longer the searched phrase will be, the better it will convert, and cheaper it will come to you. Longer searched phrase has a better name. It is called long tail keyword.

One word keyword does not convert well. On the other hand, long tail keywords, brand names, etc. converts really well.

Use negative keywords

It is easier to lose money on a PPC campaign than to make some, and it becomes particularly easy if you are not excluding negative keywords from your campaign. By keeping unnecessary keywords and keywords that do not convert, you are opening a channel through which all you money will go down in the drain.

There are some keywords that could easily be dumped into the list of negative keywords for whatever campaign you are running. Words are free, illegal download, torrent, etc., are in almost all cases could be classified as negative keywords.

Study how negative keywords work in different search engines, and use it accordingly.

Keep these in mind when creating a PPC campaign. It will help you increase conversion.

Six eventful days of 2010 have already passed, and now this realization of being in the new year has already taken hold of us. The frenzy of party is long over (well not for all), and most of us have returned back to our regular routine. Midst all these things, did you think about blogging mistakes to avoid in 2010? I did, and I am going to talk about 3 blogging mistakes I think we should avoid in 2010.

Mistakes 1: Adding up to the content clutter

Web is already full of me-too, me-too-toos, and me-too-too-toos. Most of us are just stealing the concept and rewriting it to make our blog post. The rewrites of other blog posts are nothing but bullshits that kills both the blogger’s time as well as reader’s time. It adds no value to anyone around, therefore, I have decided to stay away from adding to the content clutter and only write things that add value.

Mistake 2: Same old boring writing

Blogging is for human, by human, about human, and because we are human. We like fun. We like laughter. We hate boring data that has no relevance to our selves, and despite all these, we are still bombarded by irrelevant rattling. In 2010, we should strive to stay away from chocking our readers from constant data bombardment. This will deplete your reader base.

Mistake 3: not committing any blogging mistakes

This blogging mistake should have appeared at the top of the list. This year I am committed to making fool of myself, and sounding jackass. It has been enough of sitting on the sidewalk just to protect myself from committing any mistake. In 2010, I am going to commit a lot of blogging mistakes, and will grow from one mistake to another. I am not going to avoid committing new blogging mistakes, but yes, I will not repeat old ones.

In the first part of SEO for e-commerce website, I talked about how to use keywords in your e-commerce website, in the second part, I dealt about the nuances of writing proper tags, and the third part talked about how to avoid duplicate content. This is the fourth part of the series, and in this part, I will talk about internal linking. I hope, you are applying these practical tips in your e-commerce website, if you are not then today is the day to start doing it.

Contextual linking

Navigation links do not tell any story to sooth the search engine crawlers’ pain caused by constantly crawling through the pages. It just says: here is page A and here is page B and road to both places goes from here. How can you expect to derive any value from this? You need to inject links to different pages in your website within the content to get link juice. This will build contextual link which will tell the search engine crawlers a story they will love.

Link in product description

Interlinking two products by placing links within the product descriptions of the product is a nice little way to make all the pages visible to search bots and it provides an opportunity to squeeze juices out of long tail keywords.

Avoid using “View” or “More” words as anchor text

This is most common mistake committed by most of the e-commerce websites. Many webmasters put a brief description on the product category page about various products and use “View”, “more”, “click here to read more”, etc., beneath every brief description to direct the users to the product pages.

Avoid using such generic terms, instead, use a proper keyword (or even a long tail keyword) to link every product pages with the product category page. This will inform your prospects as well as search bots about the content on the next page. This strategy will help you a lot in improving your website ranking.

In this part of e-commerce website optimization tips, we will see how much content is valuable and what mistakes does many e-commerce website when it comes to creating content for their website. This is the third post of the series, and I will help you tackle the problem of duplicate content that is hindering your upward movement in search engine listing.

Content

Writing content for your e-commerce website is the trickiest of all. Many people err here, which jeopardize their effort to optimize their e-commerce website for major search engines. Let’s see what we need to do to avoid this mistake.

Product description

This is the most potent area where search engines bury the red flag of duplicate content deep in the ground.

Most e-commerce websites commit the crime (note I have used the word crime not mistake or blunder) of lifting the product description directly from the manufacturer’s website. They select the product description of the product they are promoting, and copy it from manufacturer’s website and paste it in their CMS thinking they have done hell of a labor.

This is a huge mistake. Do not just copy product description, write your own. Duplicate content is not good.

User generate product review

Encourage your customers to write review about the product they have purchased. Ask them to write honest reviews about their purchase. This is good way to get original content for your e-commerce website.

iFrame and duplicate content

There are times when we cannot do without copying and pasting content from manufacturer’s site into your website like copying the product specification.

This is a big problem. If you copy specification from manufacturer’s website then essentially you are creating duplicate content, but if you do not copy them then how would you write specifications? You cannot possibly reword it for all the products.

How to do it?

It is here that iframe comes into play. If you have to use duplicate content then use it inside an iframe. This way you will avoid penalty. And keep the iframe borderless. This way your visitors will not come to know that the content they are viewing is not there. You can use iframe to solve any duplicate content problem in your website when you have to use same content on many pages.

If content is the king then a well-designed website is the usher who shows you the way to the king. A well designed website is thus very, very important, and still web designers commit the following sins that stop their visitors from meeting the king (content). I am listing these mistakes below just because I do not want you to repeat them.

Web page takes a life-time to load

This is a common mistake, which is accredited to a newbie web designer, but it is committed by even professionals. No matter how fast the Internet becomes, your visitors are never going to like a slow-loading website. The more advanced the technology is becoming the less tolerant people are becoming. Why would they wait for your website to load, if they can get the similar content elsewhere?

Information overload

Power overload cause circuit breaker to act, which results in a blackout. The same happens with information overload. Do not provide more than your visitors can choose.

“Yes content is the king, BUT who wants to be surrounded by the king all the time.”

Instead of providing too many kings, try to bring a king who is fun to go around, who is jovial, that is to say, have limited content but it should be relevant.

Confusing navigation

Well, how will you reach the king [content], if you cannot find the door? The links on your website are doors that lead your visitors to the content. Do not confuse your visitors by placing links in the nooks and corners. Spend time to form a navigation chart, and make the website’s navigation as intuitive as it should be.

Bad organization

To continue the metaphor of king, I would say, badly organized information (content) is like a king who is clumsy; one who does not know where he has placed his essentials. Organize the content in the way you want it to see when surfing other websites.

Flash & limelight

There is a downside to flash content: people get too involved in the sight and sound to worry about the real character of the page. Flash is good, it can even get indexed but still avoid it as much as you can. Too much flash and no content means no user.
