23 Nov 09 5 Blogging Blunders

Blogs are fun and rewarding. It can serve many purposes. It can work as a tool to promote your business or it can be a business in itself. The power of blogging is immense if utilized properly, but not all the bloggers can derive that power that because in the initial days, it requires a lot of work. And not all the bloggers have the mettle to carry on. This is the reason a blogger commit one or all of the following blunders, which proves catastrophic for their blogs. I hope you will not commit the same mistake after knowing the big blogging mistakes.

Blogging Blunder 1: Too few and too irregular blog posting

This is the biggest mistake, because content is what your visitors come to read, and if you do not regularly provide them with updated content then they are not going to come back. Your visitors will stop seeing you. I am not asking you to post 5 times or day or even daily because the frequency of posting depends upon the niche you operate in. But, whatever frequency you choose, stick to it. Follow a routine. If you post on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays then you should stick to it, no matter what.

Blogging Blunder 2: Too lazy to proofread and edit

If you commit occasional small writing mistakes then it is okay, but if your mistakes are too glaring and too overwhelming then you should proofread it, and edit your post before putting it live. How many people do you know who can put up with shoddy work? I know of not many. No one likes a badly written post, regardless of the type of content that you have. Proofread your post manually for grammatical and spelling errors.

Blogging Blunder 3: Too busy to care for comments

Comment stimulates conversation and conversation helps us build communities. Comment, conversation, and community forms the 3 Cs of blogging. Ignore any of them and you are doomed. Reading and responding to comments are critical for the blogging success. Do not ignore any comment. Read it, understand it, and send a reply. The more you will engage your audience in conversation the frequent they will visit to your blog.

Blogging Blunder 4: Irrelevant headlines

A good (and descriptive) headline works as a magic, and a bad (and cryptic) headlines scare the visitors as ghosts. Write good headlines and see the increase in readership. Read the following posts to know about writing headlines.

Blogging Blunder 5: Too busy to care for design, plug-ins, and maintenance

Keep your blog well-maintained and updated. This will keep your blog secure. Use an intuitive navigation link structure. Make the important things easily accessible, and install all the required plug-ins. Give extra care when choosing a design; no one like too flashy and shabby blog.

14 Jun 09 Six Blogging Mistakes to Avoid

It started its journey as a web log. Now, a blog is no more just a web log. It is a full-fledged business for some, and a source of authentic information for many. In its initial days, blogging was considered just another fad, but slowly but surely it cemented its position as a serious online enterprise.

Many people have started their blogs; some succeeded and many failed. The question is why? Is there any formula for blogging success? Or can there be any formula to guarantee success in any form? Well, in my view, there cannot be any formula for success, but there are some surefire ways that lead to failure. If you believe that avoiding mistakes that lead to failure takes you one step closer to success then this article is for you. Here, we will discuss about some egregious mistake that we need to avoid in order to push failure away from us.

Do not be me-too

No one likes me-toos. It holds true, whether it’s a brand, or a blog. There should be some real reason for the audience to come to your place. Why some blogs are famous, and others are not? Why some gets millions of visit, and others not even tens? The question might be many, but the answer is just one: the lack of real differentiation.

  • You can differentiate yourself from others, even if your niche is very much crowded. You can think of using more simple and innovative design that doesn’t take toll on the readers as a point of differentiation.
  • You can also change the style of writing, or vary the length of the post to differentiate your blog from the rest.

There can be many ways to differentiate, and to find one, all you need to do is to think.

Are you speaking from the ivory tower?

If you think, you are up there and your readers are somewhere down here then you need to open your windows, and use your binoculars to get a better view. You do not have any reader! People like to talk to only the person with whom he or she feels connected. Does your blog gives enough reason for people connect with you? Do your readers know who are you; where you are from; what you do, and what makes you write on the topic you are writing? Remove your mask, and let your readers know about you. Put your picture and a brief biography on the about page of your blog. This will help people connect with you. People connect with People. Know this fact!

Thou art Shakespeare?

If you think so then go and write plays, but I doubt if it will succeed! Even Shakespeare used the language his audience understood then why you are after choking your content with unnecessary layers? Keep the content simple, and error-free.

As we all know, people do not like to read much on the internet, so make your posts visual.

  • Make the keywords bold.
  • Break the article by supplying subheadings.
  • Add list if possible.
  • Keep the paragraphs short and simple.
  • Use bullet points.

Add value

I like you, and you like me, but why?  What is the one thing that makes us like each other? Why do you come to pay me a visit? You must be finding some value in coming here?

Anyone will come to you or talk to you only if they derive some value from the time they invested by being here. This is quite fair! And by value I do not mean any financial gain, or any favoritism. If I make you happy then this humor is also of some value to you. Your readers will come to your blog, only if they get something that is important to them.

Why don’t you talk to me?

You have written a nice blog post. I liked it, and I have written back in the comment box, but what the heck! You did not reply, why? Do not let your readers and the commenter of the post feel this. This happens many times and it can take your blog down. Your answer to the commenter’s reply will caress his or her ego. Your reply will make him or her feel better about themselves. It may increase the frequency of their visits as well.

Save me, I am drowning!

Save him! He can be your reader; a loyal reader in that who is in this situation because of your over-posting. Do not post too many articles on your blog. Writing a 1000+ words article even twice a day is too much for people to digest. Maintain a healthy ratio or your reader will get left behind. Find out how many posts you need to post per week to succeed in your niche, and how often do you need to update your blog? Make a schedule and follow it!

03 Apr 09 SEO SIMPLIFIED: What is “Search Engine”

We shall begin the second part of the SEO Simplified series with a definition of search engine and an explanation of how it works.  A search engine is any program that searches documents for the keyword entered by the user, but in general, we use the term search engine in association with online portals like, Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, Alta Vista, Excite, Lycos etc.  From now onward in the series, whenever we use the term search engine, we will be referring to web search engines, like the ones listed above.

When you enter a keyword in the designated area of any of these search portals, the portal sends a program called spider out on the web to look for as many files with matching keywords as it can, and at the end (when gathering the data is complete), the search engine produces the result on the page, called Search Engine Result Page (SERP).  The result is presented as a list of URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) that is ranked on the basis of relevance to the keyword searched for.

search-result

The image above shows how a typical search result looks line in SERP.  The result was produced by Google against the keyword search engine.  In the result above you can see that Google has highlighted the keyword search engine wherever it is mentioned.  It has also highlighted the term search because I went for the broad match search option.  If I had gone for phrase match (by putting the keyword(s) within quotes) then only “search engine” would have been highlighted.

The page in the result is optimized for the keyword “search engine,” by using the keyword in proper places like in the title, the URL and in the meta description.  We will discuss these tags later in detail.

From its beginning, in 1993, with the launch of Aliweb to Gezzmo search of 2009, search engines have evolved significantly.  Now the search results are more organic or algorithmic as opposed to the primarily human-input driven search results of the initial days, for example, Aliweb did not used any web spider or web robot to index web pages.  The database of Aliweb was dependent on information provided by the web site administrator himself about the existence of his web site.  Search engine business has come of age with the launch of today’s search Goliath, Google.com, in 1998.

As per the data of searches in February 2009, Google controls more than 60.3 percent of the worldwide search market, second to Google is Yahoo with 20.6 percent market share and with 8.2 percent, MSN is in the third position.  There are some regional search engines (like Baidu in China, Guruji in India, Yandex in Russia, etc.) as well that collectively control a significant portion of the search market.

The 60 percent estimate given above is the most conservative one.  In the actual consumer market Google has a far bigger share (more than 80 percent) of the search pie.  MSN and Yahoo use the power of default to reach the figure estimated above.  If you are a computer newbie that uses the in-built search box of the Internet Explorer and Flock browsers to meet your searching needs then you are using MSN and Yahoo respectively (as they are the default search engines for these browsers).

The actual market is when either a user types a search engines URL to fetch the result he or she wants or if the user is aware of which search engine he or she is using and why.  That is why almost all the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) activities are targeted primarily towards Google.  Search business has gone niche now, but Google is still ruling the roost.
