30 Jul 09 Why to Blog?

Why should I blog is one of the most basic questions asked by a blogging newbie, and also by serious academicians and researchers who feel this is a sheer waste of time. Today morning was the last time I heard about this from a friend of mine who is associate professor in Georgia State University, and author of quite some books. His words were, “why would I want to tell the world which shampoo did I buy today?” I talked him into blogging, and he showed his inclination towards writing about the situation in Atlanta.

The conversation I had with my friend made me think about this issue, and then I decided to write a post to build a case in favor of blogging.

Reason 1: You should use blog as a tool to express what you think, and inform people about the issue you think is important for either all of us, or for any one community.

Reason 2: You can also resort to blogging, if you want to promote your product, services or any social cause.

Reason 3: Helping others is a noble thought, and blogging can play a very critical role in disseminating awareness about any issue. Each one of us goes through some trying situations in life, and some of us are better off in dealing with them than others; hence; it is our duty to share this knowledge with people who are not better off in handling such situations, and blogs can be very useful in that.

Reason 4: People also use blogging as a tool to establish themselves as experts in their chosen fields. It is a great way to show your expertise.

Reason 5: Blogging is also used to bring like-minded people to discuss about a topic. It helps you connect with people who think like you.

Reason 6: Blogging can a powerful tool in seeding a radical thought or swaying votes. If you are a powerful blogger, you can use this expertise to influence people’s thinking about a certain issue or a political party.

Reason 7: Your blog does not only help you share what you know with others, but the resultant effect of blogging can also help you in staying up-to-date on the things you care about.

Reason 8: You can also use blogging to stay connected with your friends and family.

Reason 9: Having fun and flexing your creative muscle can also be a reason to blog. People use their blogs to show their creativity and also to have fun.

Reason 10: This indeed is last on the list, but by no means we can call it the least important. A large number of people choose blogging because they want to make money from it. Most of them do not succeed in making money is altogether a different story.

12 Jun 09 SEO SIMPLIFIED: Writing Meta Tags

Instead of discussing about any new concept, in the last two articles, we focused our attention on some of the mistakes, which if not avoided will nullify all the hard work done in terms of search engine optimization. In this article, I will share some meta tags writing tips that will prove effective in getting a better ranking in the search engine result pages (SERPs).

As we discussed earlier, meta tags plays a very critical role in SEO, and the two meta tags that are very important are meta description tags and meta keyword tags. We will be focusing our attention on these two meta tags in this article.

Writing meta description tag

Meta description tag appears below the page title of each of the search result, and it has a significant impact on the click through rate of the displayed link. When writing meta description tags, please keep the following points in mind.

  • A meta description should be less than 160 characters.
  • It should be legible for the human reader.
  • No two pages should have the same meta description tag.
  • Texts in meta description tag should reinforce the keyword used in title tag or the main keyword of the web page. Try synonyms, plurals, or other versions of the same keyword. Try different combinations as well.
  • Use modifiers with the other variants of keywords to reinforce the theme of the web page.
  • A good meta description tag can differentiate your site from other sites on the same page.

Meta Keyword Tags

Due to its nature of being susceptible to spamming, and keyword stuffing, this meta tag has lost its former glory, yet it will not hurt to optimize your page with putting the right keywords in here.

  • This meta tag is used primarily for the web crawlers. Your reader has nothing to do with it.
  • Number of keywords should not be more than three.
