SEO is very important for the success of your website, but there are times when SEO will do no good. One such situation is the time when you need immediate result. SEO cannot give that because this thing takes time. What are the other situations when you need to use PPC campaign?
- You need to use PPC campaign to pull in traffic when you need immediate result because SEO takes months before it starts showing some result.
- You can also use PPC campaign to show your search presence when getting SEO listing seems difficult. For example, if the first page result against a keyword contains links from universities, Wikipedia, Amazon, etc., then you will have to use PPC to get on the first page of SERP.
- If you are running a time-sensitive campaign, or have a product which can only be sold in one particular season or month than you will need to use PPC campaign to promote your product or service.
- If you have a new site, it will take time before search engines start showing results from your site. In such situations, you will need to use PPC campaign to reach your target audience.
- If you are using Flash, AJAX, JavaScript, or any other opaque content then you will need to use PPC to make your presence felt for the chosen keyword. Search engine spiders have hard time indexing such content.
- You can also use PPC to test your website design, keyword, landing page, etc. PPC can be a good website testing tool.
Contrary to what other thinks or preaches, PPC is not bad word. When preparing a marketing campaign do not overlook this tool. PPC may be expensive, but it is a very useful tool if used judiciously.

“What the heck is so different about optimizing an e-commerce website? I think, it’s all the same.”
This is a typical newbie response when the here SEO for e-commerce is different than SEO for normal website. And in this mini – series, I will tell you how you can optimize your e-commerce website. These are the same tips that Amazon, eBay, and other online biggies apply to their e-commerce website. You can also apply these tips in your e-commerce website and take your e-commerce website to the first page of Google.
We will start our discussion with learning about keywords in the context of e-commerce website.
Tip 1: Find Commercial keywords
Use the keywords tool that you have to find the keywords that people type when they need to purchase some stuff. Abstain from keywords that include the word “Free”, “Freebie”, “giveaway” etc., whereas keywords that include “sale”, “discount”, “cheap”, etc., should be devoured for. When conducting a keyword research for your e-commerce website then do it with an intention to find commercial keywords only. If you have added blog to your e-commerce site then use these commercial keywords in blogs as well.
Always remember, people do not search for or very rarely search for brand name, and ISBN number; what they search for is the solution to their problems. Keep this in mind when making a list of keywords to use in your e-commerce website.
Tip 2: Keywords column in database
While creating a database make a column for SEO keywords along with product, price, brand name, SKU code, ISBN number, category, etc. The keywords you feed in the database should also go into page titles of the web pages, meta keyword tag, meta description tag, as well as in the content of the body. This is important in order to make your product searchable in search engines.
Tips 3: Singular and plural keywords
If you have been doing SEO optimization for quite some time then you must be aware that a singular keyword fetches one kind of traffic, while, plural get another kind of traffic.
Do not use plural keywords on product pages. Limit its use to home page and your sales landing page. Product page should only take singular keyword.
Tips 4: Do not Stuff your keywords in navigation
Do not stuff your navigation with keywords. This is pointless. It bores the audience, and repels them.

While taking one of my random walks on the Internet, I happen to visit Alexa.com, the leading internet data company that reports user behavior of web users. I was not surprised to see the names I saw in Alexa’s Top Sites list. But what surprised me was the variation between Alexa data and the data released by Com Score.
In Com Score’s list of Top 50 Online Properties in September 2009, Facebook was at number 5, and at number one was Google sites (Google sites means all sites of Google). In Alexa ranking also, Google (Alexa Top Sites list is consists of individual website not family of sites) was at number one, but a number two we have Facebook. Yahoo.com stayed comfortably at number three. It is worth noting that Yahoo Sites were also at number three in Com Score’s rating.
The list goes as follow:
- Google
- Facebook
- Yahoo
- YouTube
- Windows live
- Wikipedia
- Blogger
- MSN
- Baidu
- Yahoo Japan
- My Space
- Google India
- QQ
- Twitter
- Google Germany
- Microsoft.com
- Google China
- WordPress.com
- Sina.com.cn
- Google UK
As you can see from the list, we have 3 social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace and twitter), two blogging platforms (WordPress, Blogger), and two other user generated content sites (YouTube and Wikipedia) in top 20.
Why the list is different from the list presented by the Com Score? For one thing, Com Score presented a list of sites according to the usage in the United State, but this list reflects the global usage of the internet.
The top sites list page of Alexa has following to say:
The sites in the top sites lists are ordered by their 1 month Alexa traffic rank.
The 1 month rank is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors and pageviews over the past month. The site with the highest combination of visitors and pageviews is ranked #1.
Alexa is a fully-owned subsidiary of Amazon.com
