07 Feb 10 Not Everyone Pays Full Attention to TV During Super Bowl

This could be a piece of a good new or a piece of a bad news for you (depending upon the side you are), but The Nielsen Company has found that 12% of Super Bowl visitors do not pay full attention to their television sets when watching the game. They have one eye fixed on Television, while other helps them scan computer monitor. This new data came out of the A study of simultaneous TV and Internet usage conducted by the said company.

The Nielsen Company found that users watching both were more engaged with general interest websites, e-mails, and social networking websites. One interesting finding came that only 18% of simultaneous users checked sports related websites.

Among the sites that were accessed the most by simultaneous users during Super Bowl, Facebook stood at number one position with 23.50% viewers accessing it, while Google with 21.60% users stood at number 2.

07 Feb 10 3 Marketing Matrix You Must Use for Your Small Business

There are several things that matters when you develop and execute the marketing plan for your business, but some matrix are more important than the rest. In this short blog post, I am going to talk about 3 marketing matrix that are very important. Those are:

  • PESTEL matrix (Political, Economical, Social, Technological, Environmental, and Legal)
  • SWOT matrix (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threat)
  • PLC (Product Life Cycle)

PESTEL

PESTEL matrix helps you understand the external environment in which your business is going to operate. It scans every factor that comes together to form the external environment. It tells you about political decisions and policies, economic factors like interest rates and taxes, social factors like new trend and social condition, new technology, environmental factors like weather condition and climate, and legal framework in which your business will breathe.

SWOT

SWOT stands for Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats. This matrix help you understand what is positive about your product, and what can cause its demise. This knowledge will help you a great deal in plotting your move on the strategy canvas. Your success and failure will depend a great deal on this.

PLC

PLC or Product Life Cycle is another important matrix. PLC divides the life cycle of a product into four categories: Introduction, Growth, Maturity, or Decline. It tells you about the stage of life cycle in which your product is. This knowledge will help you device a fitting strategy and tactics to cash in on the opportunity you are offered, or the threats you need to safeguard your products from. Different PLC stages require different measures. Pricing, promotion, placement, and marketing strategy for a product in the introduction stage will be different from a product in growth stage.

You should use all three matrices if you want to make informed decision pertaining to your business.

07 Feb 10 PayPal Collapsed for India, Now What?

It has not been a pleasant February for Indian freelancers, bloggers, online marketers, and affiliate sales person, PayPal has stopped sending payments to India. Well, they claim they have just stopped personal payment to India, but in reality, almost all types of payments—personal, services, invoiced, etc., — have been blocked by PayPal. When consulted, they say it has some issues with its “business partners” and “credit card companies” (as told to me by inarticulate customer care representative), which according to him will get fixed with seven days time.

Like countless others, I too doubt the authenticity of this claim. And like others, I too cannot help and reflect on the future of outsourcing to India?

Who runs the show?

It was a hard pill to swallow, but PayPal has proved that it is not the countless clients, freelance exchanges, job boards, blogging jobs, and small IT jobs that are running the show not what driving the freelance economy in India; it is PayPal that does. We are dependent on this company, and freelancing in India depends a great deal on the whims and fancies of PayPal.

It is PayPal that runs the show.

What needs to be done?

It is high time for us to look for alternative. There are quite a few, but none of them are half as good as PayPal is, yeah I am confessing this, though reluctantly. Moneybookers, Alterpay, 2CO, Xoom, Wire transfer, Western Union, eGold, etc., are there, but they are either too complex or not at all good.

We need to form an Indian equivalent of PayPal to safeguard ourselves from PayPal and other companies like that. An Indian online payment processing system that works according to the guidelines of Reserve Bank of India (Indian central bank) should be formed.

Confusion is not a nice place to be in. It is dark adn dingy in here, and it feels very bad.

06 Feb 10 Blog with a Friendly Face – Part 4

Presentation is important. How you present yourself will decide how people will perceive you. And believe me know one likes to befriend people who do not conduct them smartly. In this article I will talk about presentation part of a blog.

Get a professional designed blog theme

A blog design plays a very important role in making your blog look good. You should not mess with the design part of your blog. Hire a designer and get a custom theme for your blog. It will make your blog look different, and as they say it, looks matter.

If not, buy a professional theme

If you are just starting out then you may not have the budget for hiring a designer to design a cool theme for your blog. If this is the case then at least buy a professionally designed theme for your blog. I will not recommend going for any free themes, as they are bad-looking or overly used.

Post Format

It is not just the content of the post that matters, but it is the way it is presented. Use image, table, graphs, videos, and presentations etc., to make your post appear cool. In the text-only posts as well, you can craft paragraphs in such a way that it looks cool. You can use bullets, nested headings, etc., to achieve this purpose.

Before I talk about anything else in the series—which actually I am tempted to do—you should apply these tips in your blog. Go ahead and get a professional theme and also create a simple post. I will wait till you are done with that.

Word of caution: Do not waste inordinate amount of time on searching for a web designer or a professionally designed blog theme. Overdoing kills the joy.

In a study conducted for December 2009 by a market research firm comScore, Inc. it was found that Google has outperformed the global search market in year-on-year (YoY) growth. Google has recorded a YoY growth of 58% in December 2009 against December 2008, whereas, search market worldwide grew by 40%.

People used Google to make 87.8 billion searches in December 2009 as against 55.6 billion searches in December 2008. Yahoo came at distant number two position with only 9.4 billion searches in the same period. Chinese search engine was at number 3 with a total search volume of 8.5 billion searches. (See image for the complete result).

Among the search engines that outperformed the growth of search market were: Yandex with 91% growth, Microsoft sites (70% growth), eBay (58% growth), and Facebook (54% growth).

Bing (part of Microsoft sites) looked positive, but it still has a long way to go before it could match Google’s result. It would be interesting to see from here how it does in coming months.
